Letter to the Hallowell Record about the Cohen Project
On a daily basis Spectrum Generations’ Cohen Community Center in Hallowell serves the aging population in a multitude of ways. Luncheon, meeting friends, medical insurance assistance, adult day care, Meals on Wheels—the list goes on and on. Much of the assistance that is provided to residents in more than 20 local communities is by volunteers. The staff admits they can never properly thank these volunteers for their time, energy and caring!
In ten years since the Center was created just over the turnpike in outer Hallowell the interest and popularity of the Cohen Center has grown to the place where no longer can the numbers be accommodated. As a result a fund raising campaign will soon be underway. To expand the building and outfit the new area with the proper equipment will cost $325,000.00. That amount might stagger you but through the efforts of a diligent staff, $225,000.00 has already been acquired. The soon to be campaign hopefully will bring in $100,000.00 (more completely acceptable) and the project will be underway.
News releases tell us the elderly population in this country is the largest of any age group. Little wonder that the idea that germinated with Spectrum Generations (formerly Senior Spectrum) some years ago was a wise move toward making life more friendly, neighborly and community oriented. Every one of us are headed toward the word we may not relish—but “senior” is just a step away. Make yourself be proud if you are contacted to add to the funds needed—but don’t wait to be asked-step forward and help get the “reservations needed” list erased from the bulletin board!
